Using a .txt File is an easy way to validate the ownership of your target. You just need to add a file to the root of your server, and you'll be ready to scan in no time.

Step 1: Choose File as the method for verifying the ownership of your Target

Step 2: Create the file

To add the file to the root of your server, you first need to create it. So, create a file with the filename given on the "Verify target" screen, and add "Probely" as the contents of that file.

The filename usually looks something like this:

123abcd4-56ef-7890-g123-h4567i89j012.txt

Step 3: Upload the file to the (document) root of your website

After you've created the txt file, place it in your website's root directory.

Step 4: Click 'VERIFY' and Start your first scan

After you have verified your target, you can start scanning!

Note: Once we have verified your target, you can remove the file from your website.

Common Issues and Mistakes

Incorrect file location or access rights

Probely might not be able to access the txt file if it is in the wrong location or protected with specific access rights. To make sure this is not the issue, try manually accessing the file yourself, while logged off from your target (if it requires authentication).

Hidden Characters

Make sure the file doesn't contain additional hidden characters.
